The Visual Side of Sound

Ok, I’m pretty sure this was the most fun we had all summer!

We borrowed this activity from the Exploratorium in San Francisco (thanks guys!). We built devices that translate the vibrations that you create when you talk or sing into visual representations. Oh yea, and it’s also a LASER LIGHT SHOW!

The device consists of a frame, a laser pointer, a membrane (a balloon in our case), and a reflective surface. When you talk into the device, your voice causes the membrane to vibrate. As the membrane vibrates, it moves the reflective surface that the laser is shining on, changing the angle of the reflection rapidly.
